Blind Bartimaeus            They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.    When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”    Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”    Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.”    So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.    Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.”    Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. Job’s Friends            Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:                 “If one ventures a word with you, will you be offended?  But who can keep from speaking? See, you have instructed many; you have strengthened the weak hands.  Your words have supported those who were stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees.    But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed.  Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?”                 “Think now, who that was innocent ever perished?  Or where were the upright cut off?  As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.  By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are cons...

Job’s Health            One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the  Lord , and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord.   The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the  Lord , “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” The  Lord  said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason.”    Then Satan answered the  Lord , “Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to save their lives.   But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.”             ...

Job            One day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the eldest brother’s house,   a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell on them and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you.”    While he was still speaking, another came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; I alone have escaped to tell you.”    While he was still speaking, another came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three columns, made a raid on the camels and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was still speaking, another came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house, and sud...

Saul’s Rash Oath            Then Saul and all the people who were with him assembled, and they went to the battle; and indeed every man’s sword was against his neighbor, and there was very great confusion.   Moreover the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, who went up with them into the camp from the surrounding country, they also joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.   Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden in the mountains of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, they also followed hard after them in the battle.   So the Lord saved Israel that day, and the battle shifted to Beth Aven.   And the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had placed the people under oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.”   So none of the people tasted food. 1 Samuel 14:20-24   ...

Jonathan                 Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the  Lord will act for us; for nothing can hinder the  Lord  from saving by many or by few.”    His armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that your mind inclines to. I am with you; as your mind is, so is mine.”   Then Jonathan said, “Now we will cross over to those men and will show ourselves to them.    If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them.    But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up; for the  Lord  has given them into our hand. That will be the sign for us.”    So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, “Look, Hebrews are coming out of the...

Zacchaeus                 He entered Jericho and was passing through it.    A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.    He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.    When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.”    So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.    All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.”    Then Jesus sai...
